The Hoody Allen Files: Vol 1, Kool DJ Red Alert August 1989

Alright boys and girls, we have a rare treat for Mixshow Wednesdays…

My mans and them, brother from another mother, rap industry mover and shaker, original real head, simply great collectro and part-time Good Records NYC employee Zvi “Hoody Allen” Edelman left this booklet of CDs behind the counter and was like “yo hold this until like Tuesday and shit.” It took me another couple weeks before I realized what was in there, but now I’ll be damned if he gets it back!

Anyways, long story short, I’m getting it in and have no more time for games. So with no further ado, I present The Propmaster, Mr. Jimbrowski, Kooooool DJ Red Alert on 89.7 KISS fm, live from the golden era, August 1989.

Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaeeaaaaaaaaaahhhh!

You know that smell and taste in yur mouth when you have a flashback?? This mix takes me to that place. Wow, i can’t wait for the next volumes. Classic, infectious, golden-age hip hop Red Alert on Kiss…priceless. Hit me with some links off the blackcrack-list if possible.

Nice….. i had this show.. lived way out in Suffolk county and could only get it in clear after 9 o’clock right when RED came on. I just figured out how to get my stubborn TAPE DECK to work… always wanted to do
a music blog…?? I was the TAPE KING!! still have in my dusty boxes shows/tapes of RED/CHUCK CHILLOUT
before he jetted to BLS and of course MARLEY/MAGIC and few with MARLEY/PETE ROCK when he used to cut up “In Control Of Things’ by YZ at the start of the show……. 89 was a good year!! peace….

The LES reference may be to Hotel Amazon, a rap club that’s now a community arts center on Suffolk & Rivington, Red Alert used to DJ parties there. Thanks for posting the tape.

  10. Michael Says:

Nice. This is classic hip-hop right here, from the days when it was about feeling good and not busting gats.

  11. Asia Minor Says:

This is like food for the soul… With all the drops and everything… Thank you!

    Fao Hoody Allen,

1st up thankyou Mr Allen, you are a legend in your own underwear.

I have this show from August 1989, and i have one request, or maybe its just a question?

What’s better, to up the shows with or without the ads?

I just listened back to my tape of this and the quality is super-crap [so this is the biggest shout for this version, thankyou for takin time out to clean up this doozy. It is crisp].

Personally, my interests lie as much with the music as it is in the station id’s, the dub-plates, the exclusives, the show-to-show hand-overs and strangely/ mainly, the ad’s…

I used to love the Colt 45 Billy Dee Williams ads on Kiss but my favourite one on here was just after the Kwame track ‘The Ryhthm’.

It’s an ad for a ‘Raggae and Rap Concert’ [as opossed to reggae!?] on August 18th 1989 featuring Jungle Brothers, Chubb Rock at the Farthington English Community Centre in Patterson, New Jersey.

The ad alone is as much of a throwback as hearing Red cuttin up 2 copies of ‘Versatility Remix’……..

I got one more question, was the ‘Security Extra Tight’ as promised?

Thanks again for the Red Alert, hopefully many more to come…

  18. Sex Panther Says:

    Post more of these.

  19. Jonny Says:

I will post more as I am able to. Thanks for your interest.

  20. Sex Panther Says:

Yo do you got ability to yet? I like lamp.

  21. Dec One Says:

DOPE. I’m a born and bred nyc urban child and I remember these like yesterday. I was 19 and just comin’ out of surviving the crazy 80s, bombin the trains (I was the last generation of writers) - I remember listening to red alert every week.

Thanks so much for posting this - I often feel like people don’t understand New York history and where hip hop came from and this reminds me of my roots and why I loved growing up in this crazy place.
