Phil Ranelin - The Time Is Now - Tribe
Meandering spiritual LP on the world famous Detroit jazz label… perhaps one of the easier to find among them (at least that’s what I’m told by the Stallwart Detroit Jazz Contingent) but I rarely see these ever at all. Listen to Of Times Gone By. An excellent LP and a tough pull under any circumstance (VG+/EX) SOLD

The Judge’s Nephews - Los Sobrinos Del Juez - Audio Latino
Obscure Cuban LP released out of the fertile scene in Miami. Didn’t sell on a list a while back but moved well in my shop, so I thought I’d try it again. Tough pull to be sure. Killer latin funk on Harina De Maiz but even better is the smoking latin jazz cut Corned Beef Hash. Much tougher to find (and better) than their other LP that seems to pop up. A VG copy recently sold for about $60 on eBay. This one’s sealed. (EX/NM) $100

Jazzberry Patch - S/T - JBP Productions
Obscure and sought-after private issue LP by a local Floridian jazz-funk outfit headed by Mike Longo. Check out Jazzberry Patch and These Are My Friends. Quotes as reported on their own site:
“SoulStrut.com
The meaty DJ/HipHop site said: “The highlight is the 20+ minute title number that weaves, bobs, and scorches with a sound that has been described as “Headhunters on mushrooms”, full-on with the overblown flute and organ.”
Soulgeneration
Greg Belson’s Top Ten Hogwash Pieces of Filth Playlist: “Jazzberry Patch’ Planed Off…a Rare Hammond groover that sounds like the Dee Felice Trio on steroids.”
So there you have it. Meaty Mushroom and Filthy Steroid Jazz-Funk. (EX/EX) $150

Black Voices - On The Streets Of Watts - Ala
Deep fiery spoken free jazz Last Poets style by the renown Watts Prophets. Jazz backing and fiery Angry Black Spoken Word Ishtm on an LP that doesn’t come up for sale often. Listen to a clip here: Listen (VG+/EX) $35

World, Sound & Power - Mawamba Dub Chapter 2 - D-Roy
2nd dub installment from D Witter & Crew. I feel a bit stronger about this LP than the previous installment. Hellified synth work and heavy bass as a rule. Deep dub on blue vinyl. Check out the dope tune Dee-Kee-Dee (VG+/EX) $75

Andrew Hill - Lift Every Voice - Blue Note
Beautiful spiritual jazz LP with vocals. This is like my favorite sound! Immensely listenable. Featuring Woody Shaw, Carlos Garnett, and so on… late 60s original on Blue Note in impeccable condition. Listen to Hey Hey. Tight shrink (NM/EX)$40

Harold Alexander - Are You Ready? - Flying Dutchman
Live jazz fusion set featuring Neal Creque including some stretched out jams on funky standards. Check out High Heel Sneakers (EX/EX) $12

Little Sonny - Black & Blue - Enterprise
One of those records you used to see for a bit of change in the old days, a blues artist goes funky on the Enterprise label. Backing played and arranged by the Bar-Kays. Basically a Bar-Kays record with blues harmonica, what’s bad about that. Includes the break heavy workout Memphis BK (EX/EX) $25

Dennis Brown - Visions Of - Joe Gibbs Music
Absolutely essential roots LP. Classic tunes by one of the masters of reggae in youthful rasta form. Check out Deliverance Must Come. Super clean copy (EX/EX) HOLD[b]

Sonny Murray - Sonny’s Time Now - Jihad
Intense, angry, purposeful free jazz LP on Amiri Baraka’s private Jihad label. Issued out of Newark. Incredibly scarce particularly in any kind of playable condition. I rarely cut for free jazz but this is some pretty amazing shit. Severe Black Nationalist vibes. Playable VG copy; some marks, a couple feelable ones, but plays strong for the grade. Take a listen here: Virtue [b](VG+/VG) $75

ESG - ESG II - Emerald Sapphire & Gold
4 track EP that immediately followed the 99 Records years… and displays a very similar sound. Check out the banger Bam Bam Jam. Classic ESG funky no-wave sound and one that I don’t see too frequently. Comes in a plain 12″ sleeve. (EX/EX) $50

Barbara Mason, New Birth, et al. - Gordon’s War - Buddah
Classic blaxploitation LP featuring the massive break cut “Hot Wheels”. Also features some great soul and funk cuts that tend to get overlooked. Always a tough pull. EX/EX $50

Miyoshi/Takemitsu/Mayuzumi - New Music From Japan - Odyssey
Modern symphonies by Japanese composers. Ranges from ornate to minimal. Top condition. Listen to a clip here: Textures (EX/EX) $12

Exile One - Beaucoup D’Gaz A Bo (Lotsa Music Onboard) - Disque Debs
One of the more funky Exile One LPs out there, featuring the rare groove/dancefloor cut “Instant Funk”. Listen here: Instant Funk Has become tough to find in recent years… jacket has a repaired rip across the front (VG/EX) $40

Inez & Charlie Foxx - Inez & Charlie Foxx’s Swinging Mockin’ Band - Dynamo
When I got this LP in, I thought “eh” but one listen and I was kind of floored. I would compare it more to Ike Turner’s “Black Man’s Soul” in that it’s primarily an instrumental funk LP moreso than the typical southern soul sound you might expect. Appears to be something of a budget press and I’d be interested to know what the story really is. Features original funk cuts like “Night Rumble” and “Speed Ticket” but also has covers of “Moon Song (Land Of Love)” and “I Can’t Stop Dancing” among others. Very cool. Last I saw this online it sold for 90 Euro on Superfly. (EX/EX) $75

Fausto Papetti - O Som Maravilhoso de… - Premier
Brazilian press (huh?) of this Italian instrumental schmaltz LP. The best thing about Papetti normally is the tits on the cover but this one has the monster Ultimate Breaks & Beats -comped “Love’s Theme”. One of the deepest kick drums known to man (EX/EX) HOLD

The Sensational Guitars of Dan & Dale - Batman & Robin - Tifton
Cash-in LP on the Batman craze featuring members of Sun Ra and Al Kooper’s band… Twisted standards and surf vibes with an off-kilter flavor. Pretty hip shit. Listen to a clip here: Batman And Robin Over The Roofs (VG+/VG+) $18

T Swift & The Electric Bag - Are You Experienced - Custom
Exploito budget LP that turned up in some quantity a few years back. Fuzz and drums. Kind of the usual suspects for a record like this, but of high quality. Check out “Expo in Sound”, “A Jet”, and “Take It Easy Baby”. Also features other cuts with words like “bag” “free” and “strut”. Was sealed (NM/NM) HOLD

Washrag - S/T - TMI
Another exploito record this one involving Steve Cropper and some other Memphis players. Contains a dope version of “Freddie’s Dead”. (EX/EX) $10

Black Dick - Black Dick For President - Plain Talkin’
Totally excessive triple vinyl spoken word-comedy-xxx LP in top condition. Rare. Listen to a clip here: Black Dick For President (EX/EX) $40
Grading acording to this scale:
NM (Near Mint): Record has been opened, and probably played, but is in impeccable condition. I rarely use this grade.
EX (Excellent): Has signs of use or storage, but still considered top collection quality. Jackets may display some very light wear; vinyl may have a few light sleeve marks only visible in the highest light. Sound will full and clear, with little if any noise (NOTE, some records are just pressed poorly). I usually will mark a record EX at the slightest imperfection; bid with confidence.
VG+ (Very Good Plus): Still a great copy but has a bit more wear. Vinyl may have some light scuffs or scratches, but nothing deep. Jacket may have some ringwear or seamwear. Sound should be great, with minimal if any noise.
VG (Very Good): A great play copy but clearly used. Vinyl will display many hairline scuffs or scratches, but will play with a tolerable amount of noise. Jacket may have splits and wear but will not be falling apart.
VG-, G: A record that has not been taken good care of. Will display scuffs, scratches, warps, and other defects. Will NOT skip unless otherwise noted, but will play with noise.
