Good Afternoon One And All, I hope everyone had a fantastic Valentine’s Day. And if you didn’t, here’s a little something to get you through… my Brother From Another Mother Justin Torres with yet another BEAUTIFUL mix from back in the day that heads pretty much Rip Van Winkled on; that is, until now. “The Break Up Letters” is/was Justin’s statement on love and loss, made at a time when he and I both were dealing with those conflicting feelings. From want to need to desperation to dejection, depression, and finally redemption, the mix covers all grounds of love unrequited. This is a real treat for anyone out there that’s feeling blue today or any fan of Deep Soul Music in general.

Also worth noting is that portions of this mix were culled from raw reels rescued from the vaults of famed Berkeley distributor/record shop Music City. So there are songs on here that are completely unknown and unavailable on vinyl… The absolutely killer funk-psych burner “Choirs In My Teardrops” is perhaps the most criminal example of a record that never was, but Real Heads will notice the DJ Shadow-remixed “This Time” (here as “Untitled”) by, simply, “Joe”. This mix is the first appearance of the track and the Genesis of Shadow’s piece.

So take note kiddies - there’s a lot of rare stuff on here! Some of which is not available ANYWHERE else. Enjoy, and keep your heads up. The girl or boy of your dreams is out there, waiting for you to walk right into their life… with that in mind, keep it moving. With Love - Jonny

It’s a privilege to host one of the rarest soul LPs out there… and one that’s worth every penny (IMHO). The Spice LP on TSG came into the shop a few days ago, and it is my pleasure to offer it EXCLUSIVELY on www.goodrecordsnyc.com for sale. Serious parties can submit offers to good.records@gmail.com.

TSG was a New York-based tax scam label. Basically, the idea was to print up LPs using either demo tapes from unknown groups or bootlegging previously-released material, and dump the records. Hence, big loss and tax write-off… and incredibly rare LPs that were intentionally destroyed before anyone could enjoy them. Unfortunately, I know nothing at all about the group or players behind this record. Truly unfortunate considering how good of a soul LP it is - some fantastic disco cuts and beautiful sweet ballads, not a loser to be found on it. With no further ado…

I was drinking whiskey last night, and this is normally the time that I decide to call the homie Aaron “Breakself” Anderson. Anyway, we talked about the world, the sun in the sky, and why there is not a bean in a bean pie, and I asked him to bless my site with this mix. He berated me for only drinking a half pint of Jameson (”that’s why it’s called ‘half’ - you gotta drink another one!”) but reluctantly granted my wish, grumbling the whole time that record dudes used to be able to toss back a drink or three.

Anyone who knows anything knows Aaron has all kinds of heat in his collection and he’s slapping us silly with it here. So put a Frickin’ Gerbil on your Christmas list because even Santa can’t find these records.

Good morning my people, or good afternoon if you are like me and you are rising a bit late from an evening of revelry. I spent last night with friends at Bumpshop, a monthly funk & soul party on the west side where residents Chairman Mao, Finewine, Jared Boxx (Big City Records) and David Griffiths hosted the legendary Kenny Dope of Masters At Work. We got it in, to be sure. Shout outs to Mao, Matt, Jared, Kenny, Mike, Daniel, Josh, Ari, Ritchie, Osore, Asaf, Mark, Dave, and all my weoples that I got to chop it up with.

Now on this Sunday I find that I am not scared, therefore I did not go to Church. But what I did do was upload one of the most sublime and touching gospel LPs I own… it’s a completely unknown 4 man group from Connecticut (Stamford and Bridgeport, to be precise) and if you are into lo-fi, sounds-like-it-was-recorded-in-a-tin-can private issue soul music this is for you. There’s a full band, so it’s not exactly like Otis G. Johnson or what have you but… well let’s just say that the spirit shines through on this one. You can find the funk on “Wade In The Water” but my personal favorite is “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” which is simply heartbreaking. Enjoy.
