JBX – California Dreamin’

by Jonny on Aug.20, 2010, under Mixes

As promised, here’s a great set from our weekly radio show that my man JBX – pka Jared Boxx, of Big City Records – threw down a month or so ago. Much to my surprise, rather than coming with the rare soul heat he’s usually known for, the homie pulled out the CMW and Too $hort! Being a West Coast native myself, I was buzzing for the rest of the night. Check it out here:

A Spoonful Of Sugar

by Jonny on Aug.07, 2010, under Blog, Mixes

Collector, author, and good friend of Good Records, Mr. Carter Van Pelt posted this full up 3-part mix of Sugar Minott tunes (including a great interview) following his passing last month. Considering that Sugar’s was one of my favorite voices in reggae, I wanted to re-post this for your enjoyment. Nothing is sweeter than Sugar as I should say!

But also let this post serve as a stealth promotion of Carter’s 2nd Annual Coney Island Sound System Beach Party event, nothing but pure reggae on the beach, and it’s all happening next weekend. ALL ROAD LEAD TO BROOKLYN ON AUGUST THE 14! Nuff said.

ok, with that out of the way I present to you, Sugar Minott. Rest In Power.

Chicago, Chicago

by Jonny on Aug.05, 2010, under Blog

Been jamming this today, seems like a perfect song for the dog days of summer. Hat tip to Ebonite for the rip.

The homie Prince Language has a great edit of this as well, on his own Editions Disco label. Keep an eye out for it.

On tonight’s Daily Session…

by Jonny on Jul.23, 2010, under Blog

We have the pleasure of hosting one of the best in the game: Jared Boxx, aka JBX, of Big City Records. Big City is one of the best spots in the world for rare vinyl; owner & proprietor Jared is a top level collector and DJ (as the many patrons of now-defunct soul & funk monthly Bumpshop party can attest), but he’s also one of the nicest guys in the business. If you don’t know, now you know… tune in to the stream from 8-10pm (est) at www.dailysession.com or peep the archive at your leisure.

Galactic Convertible Music

by Jonny on Jul.13, 2010, under Blog, Mixes

DJ Doc Delay is back with another installment of the “Galactic… Music” series (for those who aren’t knowing, be sure to check the “Hot Tub” installment that was done a while back), and it’s a strong mix of outer space vibes, slow burning dope, and laid back weirdness. It comes with my highest recommendation.

In Honor Of Oscar Grant

by Jonny on Jul.12, 2010, under Mixes

Here’s an hour of anti-police, anti-establishment rap anthems.

This was done live for our Friday internet radio show, so please forgive the occasional bass rumble. S1′s, STEP!

This was my set from this past show and I’m really happy with the way it came out. A slow burner to be sure. Listen here or go to the dailysession site to download it. And be sure to tune in next week for more madness!

Look for…

by Jonny on May.03, 2010, under Blog

Good Records NYC to turn up in the upcoming film East Fifth Bliss, starring Michael C. Hall, Lucy Liu, Brie Larson and others. We’re in here filming today, and it’s shaping up to be a fun flick.

Yer boy Jonny Paycheck even makes a cameo as (what else?) a disgruntled record clerk!

… of thanks for all of the love on Record Store Day 2010. It was a great success and great fun as well. I hope all of the new customers find their way back, and that all the old ones continue to help us be one of the best record stores in the world!

Now, back to stocking the website and preparing for our 5TH ANNIVERSARY BLOWOUT in July! You heard it here first…

Record Store Day 2010

by Jonny on Apr.16, 2010, under Blog

Once again ladies and gents, Record Store Day is upon us!

Tons of new arrivals are hitting the bins… And get this… we are not going to charge a DIME of sales tax. For the entire day. That’s basically 10% off everything in the store!

We look forward to seeing you here. There will be burgers and beers out back as usual since we’re getting some stormy weather, we’re taking everything inside and instead of burgers and beer, we’ll have smokey sausages and bourbon. And customers spending anything – even $1 – are welcome to chill for a while and warm up!

Hello New World

by Jonny on Apr.07, 2010, under Blog

What’s up family,

As you can no doubt see, we’re renovating the old website.

None of the old links work. I sincerely apologize for that – nothing was lost, I don’t think, and even if it was, it was only the writing…. I have all the music backed up, and I suppose I can still string together words as well as I ever have.

On to the positive: web store is actually fully functional, we’re just adding some bells and whistles before going live. The new site looks beautiful – huge thanks to GRNYC Capo Tom “Doc Delay” Shiner on that note. He designed it 125%. And there will be blogging! Oh yes, there will be blogging. More users, more content, more mixes, more more more. No Andrea True Connection. But maybe that too.

So I ask that everyone hold tight, as we’re working hard to make it all happen (and meanwhile, run a busy record store!) and it’ll take a little time and elbow grease. In the meantime, I leave you with this:

P.S.: I lost someone very special this week. Keep your loved ones close, and cherish every day you have. We’re not promised another.

Be well -

Jonny
